Kindergarten math: what your child learns, and how to help

Kindergarten math is mostly about counting, numbers to 20, and adding and taking away within 10. Here is what that means, where children often get stuck, and simple ways to help at home.

What your child learns in kindergarten

Counting

Count to 100 by ones and by tens. Count a group of up to 20 objects and know the last number said is how many.

Numbers 0 to 20

Write numbers 0 to 20. Compare two groups or two numbers: which is more, fewer, the same.

Adding and taking away

Add and subtract within 10 with fingers, objects and drawings. Know the pairs that make 10, like 3 and 7.

Teen numbers

See 11 to 19 as ten ones and some more ones, the first step toward place value.

Shapes and measuring

Name flat and solid shapes. Compare which is longer, heavier or holds more.

Based on the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. Your state or school may order topics differently.

How to help at home

How Kidscient helps with kindergarten math

  • It starts from your child's level, not their grade. A short, friendly check finds what your child can already do. Many children are ahead in some topics and behind in others.
  • Homework help without answers. Your child snaps tonight's math homework and Curio helps with each problem by asking and hinting. Your child writes every answer. Code checks the arithmetic.
  • Guided lessons on a whiteboard. Curio explains each step out loud while drawing it, then asks your child to try. Lessons open level by level; at the founding beta they start around the grade 4 level.
  • Voice-first. Younger children who can't read or type yet can simply talk.

Parents also ask

What math is taught in Kindergarten?
In most US schools, Kindergarten math focuses on counting, numbers to 20, and adding and taking away within 10. These topics follow the Common Core State Standards, which most states use or adapted.
How can I help my kindergartner with math at home?
Count real things together: stairs, grapes, cars on the street. Play "how many more to make 10?" with fingers. Ask "how do you know?" when they answer, not just "right" or "wrong".
My child finds Kindergarten math too easy. What should we do?
Work on the next level rather than more of the same. Kidscient places children by what they can do, so a child who is ahead moves ahead.
