A Kumon alternative that teaches, at home
Kumon builds a daily habit with worksheets. If you like the habit but not the driving, the price or the repetition, here is an honest look at how Kidscient compares, and when Kumon is still the better choice.

Why families look for a Kumon alternative
From published reviews and parent forums, the common reasons are:
- Repetition. Some parents describe Kumon as a "worksheet factory", with the same kind of sheet for weeks (MyEngineeringBuddy, Kumon review).
- Drill without explanation. Instructors mostly grade and assign; the method is designed for the child to work things out from the worksheets.
- Cost per subject and per child. Two children in math and reading can pass $500 a month.
- Driving and fixed hours. US parents spend about 38 minutes a day driving children to activities (Scripps News / Talker Research, 2026).
When Kumon is the better choice
- Your child is thriving on the routine and you're happy with the progress.
- You want your child away from screens for practice.
- You value a person at a center checking work in front of your child.
- You want a program with decades of history: Kumon has been running since 1958 and has close to 1,900 US locations (Kim, Goodman and West, IZA Discussion Paper 17178 (2024)).
When Kidscient is the better choice
- You want your child to understand why, not only to get faster. Curio asks your child to explain, and adjusts to what they say.
- You want help with tonight's homework, reading and writing too, not only a separate practice track.
- You have more than one child, or you're tired of the drive.
- You want hints rather than answers: research found answer-giving AI hurt exam scores while a hint-only tutor didn't (Wharton: Bastani et al., PNAS 2025).
Questions parents ask
Is Kidscient cheaper than Kumon?
Usually, yes. Kumon typically costs about $130 to $220 per subject per month for one child. Kidscient Family is $29.99 a month for the whole family, or $249.99 a year.
Does Kidscient use worksheets like Kumon?
No. Curio teaches each idea out loud on a whiteboard and asks your child to explain their thinking. Kidscient also has printable activity packs, but they aren't drill sheets.
Can my child do Kumon and Kidscient together?
Yes. Some families use Kidscient for homework help and reading on non-Kumon days. If Kumon's worksheets are going well, there is no need to stop.
Is Kidscient self-paced like Kumon?
Yes. Like Kumon, Kidscient places your child by what they can do, not just their grade, and moves on when they show they understand.
